The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide. All time zones are measured as positive or negative offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the modern successor to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The offset tells you how many hours and minutes ahead of or behind UTC a particular location is. For example, Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) is UTC+5:00, meaning clocks in Pakistan are 5 hours ahead of UTC. New York on Eastern Standard Time is UTC-5:00, meaning it is 5 hours behind UTC.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks by one hour during the warmer months of the year. This effectively moves an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, which many countries find beneficial for energy savings and extended evening activity. The USA, Canada, most of Europe, and several other countries observe DST. Countries close to the equator โ including Pakistan, India, China, Japan, Bangladesh, and the UAE โ do not observe DST because their day length variation throughout the year is minimal. Our time zone converter automatically accounts for DST transitions in all supported locations.
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line running roughly along the 180th meridian in the Pacific Ocean. It marks the boundary where one calendar day transitions to the next. When you cross the International Date Line from east to west, you gain a day; crossing from west to east, you lose a day. This is why it is possible for two cities to be on the same day of the week but in different calendar days โ for example, it can simultaneously be Sunday in New Zealand while it is still Saturday in the United States.
In countries that observe Daylight Saving Time, clocks are moved forward by one hour in spring (typically on the last Sunday of March in Europe and the second Sunday of March in the USA) and moved back by one hour in autumn (the last Sunday of October in Europe and the first Sunday of November in the USA). This practice was first widely adopted during World War I as a way to save coal by reducing the need for artificial lighting during evening hours. Today, the necessity and benefits of DST are debated in many countries.
Pakistan operates on Pakistan Standard Time (PKT), which is UTC+5:00. All major cities โ Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Quetta โ share the same time zone. Pakistan does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so the offset from UTC remains constant throughout the year. When it is 12:00 noon in Pakistan, it is 07:00 AM in London, 03:00 AM in New York, 08:00 AM in Dubai, and 04:00 PM in Beijing.
The contiguous United States (the "lower 48" states) spans four time zones: Eastern Time (ET), Central Time (CT), Mountain Time (MT), and Pacific Time (PT). Eastern Time is used by the most populous states including New York, Florida, Georgia, and Ohio. The difference between Eastern Time and Pacific Time is 3 hours. Alaska operates on Alaska Time (AKT, UTC-9), and Hawaii uses Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HAST, UTC-10). Most US states observe Daylight Saving Time, advancing clocks one hour in spring and reverting in autumn.
